I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at The University of Texas at San Antonio, where I focus on quantum computing research and education. After nearly 20 years working in computational geometry, I transitioned to quantum computing in 2024, bringing a strong algorithmic foundation to this emerging field.
The pivot into quantum computing is challenging and takes perseverance for students who do not have a background in quantum mechanics. One of my main goals is to open up pathways for students who have had linear algebra but not quantum mechanics. My approach focuses on the underlying linear algebra model that underpins quantum mechanics, teaching practical quantum computing programming, including hybrid quantum-classical approaches which the community projects to be the future model of high performance computing.
An Introduction to Quantum Advantage for Computer Scientists
For many computer scientists, the journey to understanding quantum computation is frustrating: you're told to learn prerequisite after prerequisite before seeing how quantum computing can provide an advantage over classical computing. In this talk, I take a different approach. Using only discrete math and basic algorithm knowledge, I show you exactly how quantum superposition creates computational advantage. You'll understand not just what the algorithm does, but why it works and what happens when we make minor modifications. By the end of this one-hour talk, you'll have genuine insight into quantum advantage. I hope that this video can be the spark that convinces many computer science students to make the challenging journey into this exciting field.
